We are excited to announce the finalists for the September round of Our Town, Our Heroes! Cindy, Rae and Ron are all making a difference in their community, whether through a local organization donating furniture to those in need, as a public speaker educating young people about how to stay healthy or as a teacher encouraging kids to look for ways to volunteer in their neighborhood. Cindy, Rae and Ron – you inspire us!

Read on for the full nominations for this round’s three finalists. Be sure to cast your vote each day for the hero who inspires you most!

Cindy Johnson from Downers Grove, nominated by Aimee Grover

Cindy is positive, caring and thoughtful person. She spends countless hours volunteering with various organizations, including the Humane Society, the Morton Arboretum and Sharing Connections, a furniture resource for people in need. Cindy is the friend who is there to help whenever you’re in a bind. She also shows so much love for our kids by taking time to talk with them and keeping a careful eye on them as they ride their bikes. Cindy is one of most wonderful and inspiring people I know.

Rae Lewis-Thornton from Chicago, nominated by Markeeda Spencer

Rae leads her own unending crusade to educate and challenge audiences to take control of their own lives and health. Each day, Rae uses her personal life as an example that AIDS is a non-discriminatory disease and challenges the most common myths and stereotypes surrounding HIV. She uses her knowledge and celebrity to inspire others to make wise decisions about their lifestyles. Rae is a selfless hero who is on a mission to help save lives in a courageous, personal way.

Ron “Rocky” Wagner from Homer Glen, nominated by Mary Adduci

Ron is a hero to the community because of his heartfelt and selfless efforts to raise awareness and funds for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Rocky has spearheaded the fundraiser at Summit-Delta Learning Center to support St. Baldrick’s efforts in Chicago for the last four years. This year, Ron’s efforts doubled the donations from previous fundraisers. Ron is also a role model who inspires his students to help those outside their school. His heroic dedication and energy is contagious and helps raise awareness for the St. Baldrick’s cause.

I was nominated and am a finalist in the General Motors “Our Town, Our Heros” contest. It would mean a lot if you could vote, and spread the word. Thank you a ton.
The school computers can only give one vote a day so it would have to be from a home computer or phone. Thank you all so much.
