Being a Wisconsinite, it would be easy for me to rattle off a number of really wonderful things about Wisconsin… It’s the dairy capital of the United States, producing more milk than any other state; it is home to Frank Lloyd Wright, the original Barbie (aka Barbie Millicent Roberts) and Harry Houdini; the Republican Party was founded in Ripon in 1854; etc.—I could go on!
Read on for a few weird, wacky and wonderful facts about my home state, Wisconsin.
- Eagle River is known as the Snowmobile Capital of the world.
- Monroe is known as the Swiss Cheese Capital of the world.
- Sheboygan is known as the Bratwurst Capital of the world.
- In 1935, Wisconsin state law made it illegal to serve apple pie in public restaurants without cheese. (The horror! Can you imagine being in Wisconsin and not receiving cheese with every course of every meal? “An apple pie without the cheese is like a kiss without the squeeze.”)
